Economics

About Us

More precisely, Economics can be defined by the famous quote of Dr. Alfred Marshall: “Economics is a study of mankind in the ordinary business of life.” It inquires how an individual earns his income and uses it for his well-being through various economic activities. In one view, it is a study of wealth, and in the other, it is part of the study of human behavior and how scarce resources can be used to increase wealth and human welfare.

To study the above subject matter, the Department of Economics was introduced initially with the establishment of the Government Degree College Bassa (Gohar), Mandi, in 1998. Since then, it has made a qualitative effort and contribution to undergraduate teaching in Economics. The Department of Economics offers a variety of undergraduate courses, including Principles of Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, Basic Statistics and Mathematics, Development Economics, International Economics, Money and Banking, Public Finance, Basic Econometrics, and Indian Economy and related current issues.

Generally, the primary purposes of a bachelor’s degree program in economics are to introduce the basic economic principles, concepts, and theories among students and also to create awareness among them about the Indian as well as world economy through discussion on various current financial issues, up-to-date facts, and leading policy concerns.

Vision and Mission

The vision and mission of the department are to achieve excellence in teaching and learning by providing quality education to students in keeping with  the following objectives;

  • To give the students a basic knowledge of economic concepts, theories, principles, and their day-to-day applications.
