Government College at Bassa (Gohar), Tehsil Chachyot, Distt. Mandi (HP) was established in the year 1998 by the Government of Himachal Pradesh in response to the persistent demand of the people of Chachyot and Nachan assembly segments. It has come as a boon to the students, particularly girls, who could otherwise ill afford higher education at a distant place. The college is sure to provide a major thrust to the pursuit of higher education in this region. The student strength has shown a very encouraging trend over the years. In recent past we have been accredited NAAC with grade-B on Nov. 30, 2018.
The college, situated in the midst of serene and natural surroundings, offers a panoramic view of the peaks, forested hillsides, terraced fields, and picturesque hamlets. The pristine natural setting is bound to create an ideal atmosphere for the teaching-learning process to take place. Keen learners, a committed faculty, and a supportive public are witness to the college progress with each passing year and attain new goals in the field of higher education by shaping the youth into responsible citizens capable of fending for themselves.
The college presently offers courses in the faculties of Humanities, Science, and Commerce. The courses at undergraduate level are offered under the CBCS and semester system introduced by Himachal Pradesh University from the academic session 2013-14. The instructions in Humanities are provided with Discipline Specific Core Courses (DSC) in Economics, English, Hindi, History, Political Science, Sociology, Music (I), Music (V), and Geography. The students of Science can opt for Discipline Specific Core Courses (DSC) in Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Zoology. The faculty of Commerce offers DSC in Commerce. The experienced teachers in all the subjects are committed to see that college attains the required level of excellence essential for its proper growth and progress.
The college also provides opportunities for the students to participate in co-curricular, extra-curricular, NSS, NCC, Rovers and Rangers, and Sports Activities so that they are able to explore their real potential and develop into youth with robust personality traits. The subject societies are formed to carry out various activities that help the students in developing true understanding of their respective subjects. The students are also expected to exhibit disciplined behavior.
The college has got its own buildings in the form of Arts and Science Blocks with spacious classrooms, Library room, Music rooms, well-equipped Laboratories, IT Labs, and sufficient office space to conduct its functions in a smooth and effective manner. The computer labs with audio-visual and High-speed Fiber connections have been established for the benefit of the students. A well-furnished hostel for girls with all the facilities has been made functional. The highly qualified faculty and the entire infrastructure available in the college make it possible to offer students a high-quality teaching-learning environment.
In the recent past, the college affiliation has been shifted to Sardar Patel University, Mandi by the Government of Himachal Pradesh.
The mission of Government College Bassa (Gohar) is to provide an appropriate learning environment to the students of the rural areas in the vicinity for acquiring knowledge in the disciplines of Humanities, Science, and Commerce making them life-long learners, and to equip them with subject-specific and communication skills; moral values and inherent capabilities developing them into disciplined citizens and good human beings so that they are able to face the challenges of life with confidence, courage, and conviction to become productive members of the society contributing towards their own advancement as well as national development.
Government College Bassa (Gohar) shall be one of the best and vibrant institutions of higher learning in Himachal Pradesh capable of providing meaningful and life-serving education to the students, especially girls coming from a rural background, following the guiding principles of access, equity, and excellence through the use of ICT, focusing on their holistic development as leaders capable of providing effective leadership and contribution in their chosen areas of work.
